Requirements
Requirements for a Major in Philosophy
33 semester hours in philosophy, including a logic and a history requirement. The logic requirement is satisfied by completing PHIL 2203 (Logic) or PHIL 4253 (Symbolic Logic I). The history requirement is satisfied by completing PHIL 4003 (Ancient), PHIL 4033 (Modern), and one of the following: PHIL 4013 (Platonism & Origin of Christian Theology), PHIL 4023 (Medieval), PHIL 4043 (19th Century), PHIL 4063 (20th Century Continental), PHIL 4073 (History of Analytic), PHIL 4083 (Existentialism), or PHIL 4123 (Classical Ethical Theory). Majors must also complete either PHIL 3983 (Capstone Course for Philosophy Majors) or a successfully defended honors thesis in philosophy.
In addition to the College's core requirements and the above philosophy courses, all philosophy majors must also complete a World Language to the Intermediate II (2013) level. Further, majors must complete at least one of the following courses: CLST 1003 (Classical Studies Greece), HIST 1113 (World HIstory I), or HIST 1123 (World History II).
The Fulbright College writing requirement can be satisfied either by completion of an acceptable thesis or by approval of a research/analytical paper from any 4000-level course in philosophy submitted by the student to the Philosophy Department's Undergraduate Committee.
Requirements for a Minor in Philosophy
18 semester hours in philosophy, including a logic and a history requirement. The logic requirement is satisfied by completing PHIL 2203 (Logic) or PHIL 4253 (Symbolic Logic I). The history requirement is satisfied by completing PHIL 4003 (Ancient) or PHIL 4033 (Modern). A student may earn either a minor or a combined major in philosophy but not both. A student must notify the Department of his or her intent to minor.
Requirements for a Combined Major in Philosophy and African-American Studies
36 semester hours, consisting of 18 hours in philosophy and 18 hours in African-American Studies. The philosophy requirement is: 18 semester hours in philosophy to include either 12 hours over 3000 and PHIL 2203 (Logic) or PHIL 4253 (Symbolic Logic I), or 15 hours over 3000. The hours over the 3000-level must include at least three hours of value theory to be chosen from PHIL 4113, PHIL 4123, PHIL 4133, or PHIL 4143, and at least six hours in the history of philosophy (PHIL 4003, PHIL 4023, PHIL 4033, PHIL 4043, PHIL 4063, PHIL 4073) including PHIL 4003 or PHIL 4033.
