Honors Program
Requirements for Departmental Honors in Philosophy
The Departmental Honors Program in Philosophy offers upper level undergraduate students the opportunity of achieving greater maturity in dealing with philosophical issues through independent study. The candidate's plan of study will include the reading of significant philosophical works and the completion of an honors thesis, usually under the close supervision of a faculty mentor. Successful candidates will be awarded the distinction "Philosophy Scholar Cum Laude" at graduation. Higher degree distinctions are recommended in truly exceptional cases and are based upon the whole of the candidate's program of honors studies.
En route to the completion of the general college and departmental requirements, an Honors candidate must complete 12 hours of coursework in Honors Studies, which must include at least one honors colloquium and which may include up to 6 hours of thesis hours: independent readings in preparation for the thesis. (The thesis hours must be in philosophy, though the other hours need not be.) The successful candidate will also write a substantial essay during his or her senior year and give a satisfactory account of the honors readings and senior essay in an oral examination. Honors candidates must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5.
